Can a student who has never played an instrument before participate?

Yes! The Beginning Band is intended for students who have never played before. We start with how to put your instrument together and how to make a sound.

What instruments can participate?

The Concert Band instruments include: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone, tuba and percussion, Double reed instruments (oboe, and bassoon) are allowed but will require private lessons with a double reed teacher. Strings (violin, viola, cello and bass) are orchestra instruments and are not included.

Can my student join in the middle of the school year?

Beginning students that have never played an instrument before need to begin in August with the Beginning Band Class. If a student wants to start in the middle of the year, they can take private lessons but cannot be taught their instrument outside the cycle of the Beginning Band Class. Students who have previous playing experience can join in the middle of the school year and the Director will help place them in the appropriate level Band for their ability.

Where can I get an instrument?

There are two local instrument shops in Sioux Falls where instruments can be rented purchased or repaired. Schmitt Music (1209 W 41st St) and Popplers Music (1119 W 41st St).

What ages can participate?

Home School students ages 9 – 18 are able to participate.

How much does it cost to participate?

Tuition is paid at the beginning of each semester, once in August and then again in January. Current tuition amounts vary, depending on whether you register and pay by the deadline date. Please visit our Payments page for more information.

When does the band rehearse?

Rehearsals are Wednesdays & Fridays. There are no make ups for missed rehearsals. 12 weeks are allotted each semester to include the chance of one snow day.
